What is streaming media? Audio and/or video that plays over the Internet without downloading to the end user's computer. Think television and radio for your computer. Streaming is different from downloading in that playback starts immediately with just a mouse click for the viewer, and the large file is not saved to the viewer's computer. This provides a high level of security for original content.

To see Streaming video on the WEB, you need to be instaled a streaming video player like popular RealPlayer Basic ( free software ).

What are the system requirements for RealPlayer 8 Basic?

Note: Operating system requirements only apply to RealNetworks products. Third party plug- ins or add-ons may have different system requirements.

Audio and video performance will increase if your computer meets or exceeds the following:

Mac OS 8.5 or later
64 MB RAM and 128 MB virtual memory
56Kbps or faster modem
Internet connection and web browser (Internet Explorer 4.01 later or Netscape 4.05 or later)

Note: Higher bit-rate content will not perform well on a lower end Macintosh with a minimum amount of RAM. We recommend playing higher bit-rate content on a Macintosh with a 233 MHz (or faster) PowerPC G3 processor (e.g., iMac, iBook, or G3 and G4 models).

We recommend that you use RealPlayer 8 with Virtual Memory turned on and allocated to at least 65 MB. As a general rule, please do not run many programs while using RealPlayer 8 for Macintosh with high bit-rate content.

Does RealPlayer 8 Basic automatically overwrite older versions of RealPlayer?

RealPlayer 8 will automatically overwrite RealPlayer 7 and RealPlayer G2. It is not possible to have both RealPlayer 8 and RealPlayer 7 or RealPlayer G2 installed on the same computer. All your custom channels and favorites will migrate from RealPlayer 7 or RealPlayer G2 to RealPlayer 8. RealPlayer 8 will not overwrite RealPlayer 5.0 Plus and earlier unless you install RealPlayer 8 into the same folder as the older version.
